Main Point in Brief:

The total number of the actual population of the Khmel'nyts'kyi region, according to the All-Ukrainian Population Census data, accounted for 1,430.8 thousand people.

The number of the urban population, according to the All-Ukrainian Population Census‘2001 data, accounted for 729.6 thousand persons, or 51%, and that of the rural population , 701.2 thousand people, or 49%.

According to the All-Ukrainian Population Census data, the number of men accounted for 659.9 thousand people, or 46.1%, that of women – 770.9 thousand people, or 53.9%.

The total number of the permanent population of the region as of 5 December 2001 accounted for 1,426.6 thousand people, including men – 657.3 thousand people, or 46.1%, women – 769.3 thousand people, or 53.9%.

Some changes have taken place in the age structure of the population. The part of children in population has decreased, while the part of persons at the age older than able-to-work has increased, that considerably complicates present demographic situation in the region and leads to the growth in the ageing of the population.

According to the All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 data the representatives of more than 90 nationalities and ethnic groups live on the territory of the region.

According to the All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 data the language structure of the region is characterized by the following data: the part of those whose mother tongue was Ukrainian totaled 95.2% of the population of region, that was by 3.9 percentage points more than in 1989. The part of those whose mother tongue was Russian totaled 4.1% of the population, comparatively with previous census data this index had decreased by 3.9 percentage points.

The All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 results testified to the tendency to the rise of the educational standard of the population and the increase in the number of people with higher and complete secondary education. The number of people with higher and complete secondary education accounted for 795.7 thousand people, what exceeded by 21.1% the corresponding characteristic of the population census ‘1989.

According to the All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 data the number of married men and women, accounts for 731.5 thousand people.
