Main Point in Brief:

According to the All-Ukrainian Population Census data the total actual population of region accounted for 1,389.5 thousand persons, or 2.9% total population of Ukraine.

The urban population of Zhytomyr region, according to the All-Ukrainian Population Сensus '2001 results amounted for 775.4 thousand persons or 55.8% and rural population - 614.1 thousand persons or 44.2%.

According to the All-Ukrainian Population Сensus '2001 data, the number of men totaled 644.8 thousand people or 46.4% and women - 744.7 thousand people or 53.6%.

The total number of the permanent population of Zhytomyr region as of 5 December 2001 accounted for 1,389.3 thousand persons, of which 644.4 thousand men, or 46.4%, and 744.9 thousand women, or 53.6%; the urban population was 772.7 thousand persons, or 55.6%, the rural population – 616.6 thousand, or 44.4%.

The peculiarity of the national structure of the population of the Zhytomyr region is its multinational composition. According to the data of the All-Ukrainian Population Сensus, the representatives of more than 100 nationalities and ethnic groups live on the territory of region. In national composition of population of region the number of Ukrainians 1,254.9 thousand people or 90.3% of total population.

The age structure of the population, stated by the All-Ukrainian Population Census, is characterized by the following data: Since the last population census of 1989, the part of children in population has decreased, the part of the persons at the age older than able-to-work has increased noticeably, that complicates present demographic situation.

The language structure of the Zhytomyr region, according to the All-Ukrainian Population Сensus '2001 data, is characterized by the following data:The part of those whose mother tongue is Ukrainian totals 93% of the population of region,the percentage of those whose mother tongue is Russian totals 6.6% of the population.

The All-Ukrainian Population Census results showed such tendencies like the rise in educational standard of the population, increase in the number of people with higher and complete secondary education:

According to the All-Ukrainian Population Census data, of married men and women accounted for 686.7 thousand persons
