Main Point in Brief:

The total number of the actual population of the Cherkasy region, according to the All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 data, accounted for 1,403.0 thousand people.

The number of the urban population, according to the All-Ukrainian Population Census data accounted for 754 thousand persons, or 53.7% and that of the rural population - the 649 thousand people, or 46.3% of the population.

According to the All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 data, the number of men totaled 639 thousand people, or 45.5% that of women - 764 thousand people, or 54.5%.

Three towns in the region numbered (Smila ,Uman',Cherkasy) more than 50 thousand inhabitants.

Among permanent population number of citizens of Ukraine accounted for 1,387.6 thousand people, citizens of other countries – 3.8 thousand people, including citizens of CIS – 3.7 thousand people.

The peculiarity of the national structureof the population of the Cherkasy region is its multinational composition. According to the All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 data, the representatives of more than 130 nationalities and ethnic groups live on the territory of the Cherkasy region. The part of Ukrainians in the national structure of the population of the region was the largest, their number totaled 1,301.2 thousand people, or 93.1% of the total population.

The age structure of the population, stated by the All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001, is characterized by the decrease in the part of children in total population simultaneously with the increase in the part of the persons at the older than able-to-work age, that considerably complicates present demographic situation and leads to the growing ageing of the population.

The language structure of the region, according to the All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 data, is characterized by the following data: the part of those whose mother tongue is Ukrainian totals 92.5% of the population of the region, this is by 3.4 percentage points more than in 1989. The part of those whose mother tongue is Russian totals 6.7% of the population, comparatively with the data of the previous census this index has decreased by 3.6 percentage points.

The rise of the educational standard is typical of both the urban and the rural population. The number of people with higher and complete secondary education totaled 820.0 thousand people, what exceeded by 20.9% the corresponding characteristic of the population census ‘1989.

According to the data of the All-Ukrainian census of the population, of married men and women accounted for 714.5 thousand people.
