Main Point in Brief:

The total number of the actual population of the region, according to the All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 data, accounted for 1,245.3 thousand people.

The number of the urban population, according to the All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 data, accounted for 727.2 thousand persons or 58.4% and that of the rural population – 518.1 thousand people or 41.6%.

According to the All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 data, the number of men accounted for 565.6 thousand people, or 45.4 %, that of women – 679.7 thousand people or 54.6%.

Since the last population census of 1989 the number of towns in the region have stayed constant and amounts to 15.

The total number of the permanent population of region as of December 5, 2001 accounted for 1,236.1 thousand people, of which 560.5 thousand men, or 45.3%and 675.6 thousand women or 54.7%; the urban population was 716.5 thousand persons or 58%, the rural population – 519.6 thousand, or 42%.

The age structure of the population, stated by the All-Ukrainian Population Census, is characterized by the significantly reduction in the part of children in total population simultaneously with the increase in the part of the persons at the older than able-to-work age, that considerably complicates present demographic situation and leads to the growing ageing of the population.

According to the All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 data the representatives of more than 90 nationalities and ethnic groups live on the territory of the region. The part of Ukrainians in the national structure of the population of Chernihiv region is the largest. During the years that have passed since the census of the population ‘1989, the number of Ukrainians has decreased by 10.6% and their part in the population increased by 2 percentage points.

The language structure of the region, according to the All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 data, is characterized by the following data: the part of those whose mother tongue is Ukrainian totals 89% of the population of the region, this is by 3.3 percentage points more than in 1989. The part of those whose mother tongue is Russian totals 10.3% of the population, comparatively with the previous census data this index has decreased by 3.3 percentage points.

The All-Ukrainian Population Census results testified to the tendency to the rise of the educational standard .of the population and the increase in the number of people with higher and complete secondary education. The number of people with higher and complete secondary education accounted for 685.6 thousand people, what exceeded by 17.3% the corresponding characteristic of the population census ‘1989.

According to the All-Ukrainian Population Census data, of married men and women accounted for 624.4 thousand persons.
