The actual population of the region, according to the All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 data, accounted for 922.8 thousand people.
The urban population, according to the All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 data, accounted for 373.5 thousand people, or 40.5%, and that of the rural population – 549.3 thousand people, or 59.5%. Comparatively with the data of the population census ‘1989, the number of urban population has decreased by 21.5 thousand people and the rural population has increased by 6.3 thousand people.
According to the All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 data, the number of men accounted for 432.1 thousand people, or 46.8%, that of women – 490.7 thousand people, or 53.2%.
During the years that have passed since the census of the population ‘1989, the number of towns in the region has increased by one and on the All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 data there were 11 towns in the region.
The number of the permanent population of the region as of 5 December 2001 accounted for 919.0 thousand people, including men – 430.0 thousand people, or 46.8%, that of women – 489.0 thousand people, or 53.2%, the urban population – 368.2 thousand people, or 40.1%, the rural population – 550.8 thousand people, or 59.9%.
The peculiarity of the national structure of the population of the region is its multinational composition. According to the All-Ukrainian Population Census data, the representatives of more than 80 nationalities and ethnic groups lived on the territory of the region. The part of Ukrainians in the national structure of the population of the region was the largest, their number totaled 689.1 thousand people, or 75% of the total population. The age structure of the population, stated by the All-Ukrainian Population Census, is characterized by the significant decrease in the part of children in total population simultaneously with the considerable increase in the part of the persons at the older than able-to-work age, that considerably complicates present demographic situation and leads to the growing ageing of the population.
The language structure of the region, according to the All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 data, is characterized by the following data: the part of those whose mother tongue is Ukrainian totals 75.6% of the population of the region, this is by 4.8 percentage points more than in 1989. The part of those whose mother tongue is Russian totals 5.3% of the population.
The All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 results testified to the tendency to the rise of the educational standard of the population and the increase in the number of people with higher and complete secondary education. The number of people with higher and complete secondary education amounted to 465.5 thousand people, what exceeded by 18.8% the corresponding characteristic of the population census ‘1989.
According to the All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 data, of married men and women accounted for 456.6 thousand people.
