Main Point in Brief:

The actual population of Zaporizhzhia region, according to the All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 data, accounted for 1,929.2 thousand people.

The number of the urban population, according to the All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 data, accounted for 1,458.2 thousand people, or 76% of the population of the region, and that of the rural population 471.0 thousand people, or 24%.

According to the All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 data, the number of men accounted for 886.6 thousand people, or 46%, that of women – 1,042.6 thousand people, or 54%, and they have stayed in the same ratio for two last censuses.

As of date All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 there were numbered 14 towns and cities in the region, their number stays constant since census of the population ‘1989. Among total number of the towns and cities 4 numbered more than 50 thousand inhabitants.

The total number of the permanent population of the region as of December 5, 2001 accounted for 1,926.8 thousand people, including the urban population – 1,452.8 thousand people, or 75.4%, the rural population – 474.0 thousand people, or 24.6%; the number of men totaled 884.2 thousand people, or 45.9%, that of women – 1,042.6 thousand people, or 54.1%.

The age structure of the population, stated by the All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001, is characterized by the following data:

The peculiarity of the national structure of the population of the region is its multinational composition. According All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 data, the representatives of more than 130 nationalities and ethnic groups lived on the territory of the region. The part of Ukrainians in the national structure of the population of the region is the largest, it accounts for 1,364.1 thousand people, or 70.8% of the population.

The language structure of the region, according to the All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 data, is characterized by the following data: the part of those whose mother tongue is Ukrainian totals 50.2% of the population of the region, this is by 0.9 percentage points more than in 1989. The part of those whose mother tongue is Russian totals 48.2% of the population, comparatively with the data of the previous census this index has decreased by 0.6 percentage points.

The All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 results testified to the tendency to the rise of the educational standard of the population and the increase in the number of people with higher and complete secondary education. The number of people with higher and complete secondary education accounted for 1,203.1 thousand people, that was by 17% more than in 1989.

According All-Ukrainian Population Census ‘2001 data the number of married men and women accounts for 952.7 thousand people.
