Main Point in Brief:

The total number of the actual population of the region, according to the All-Ukrainian Population Census‘ 2001 data, accounted for 4,841.0 thousand people or 10 percent of total population .

The number of the urban population, according to the All-Ukrainian Population Census data, accounted for 4.364 thousand persons, or 90%, and that of the rural population 477 thousand people, or 10 percent.

According to the All-Ukrainian Population Census‘ 2001 data, the number of men accounted for 2,220.0 thousand people, or 45.9%, that of women – 2,621.0 thousand people, or 54.1%.

The number of towns according to administrative and territorial division on the date of the All-Ukrainian Population Census totalled 51 units. In a region are six cities with the number of population 100-500 thousand people.

The total number of the permanent population of region as of 5 December 2001 accounted for 4,825.6 thousand people, including the urban population – 4,345.4 thousand people, or 90%, the rural population-480.2 thousand people, or 10%. The number of men accounted for 2,210.4 thousand people, or 45.8%, that of women – 2,615.2 thousand people, or 54.2%.

The age structure of the population, stated by the All-Ukrainian Population Census, is characterized by the following data: Since the last population census of 1989, the part of children in population has decreased, the part of the persons at the age older than able-to-work has increased noticeably, that complicates present demographic situation.

According All-Ukrainian Population Census‘ 2001 data the representatives of more than 130 nationalities and ethnic groups live on the territory of the region. The part of Ukrainians in the national structure of population of region is the largest, it accounts for 2,744.1 thousand people, or 56.9% of the population.

The language structure of the Donets'k region, according All-Ukrainian Population Census‘ 2001 data, was characterized by the following data: the part of those whose mother tongue is Ukrainian totals 24.1%.

The educational level of the population is characterized by the increase in the number of people with higher and complete secondary education. The number of people with higher and complete secondary education accounts for 3,017.2 thousand people, that exceeds by 15% the corresponding characteristic of population census'1989.

According All-Ukrainian Population Census‘ 2001 data the number of married men and women, accounts for 2,341.5 thousand people.
