The total number of the actual population of Luhansk region, according to the data of the All-Ukrainian census of the population ‘2001, accounted for 2,546.2 thousand persons.

   Population density of region was 95 persons per sq. km. , according to the All-Ukrainian population census data(in Ukraine – 80 persons per sq. km). Mostly density of Alchevs'k city council – 2433 persons per sq. km., the least population density of Roven'ky city council - 423 persons per sq. km. In districts this index is considerably below. Especially low population density in Sverdlovs'k district -13 persons per sq. km, the greatest in Pereval's'k district -108 persons per sq. km

    Changes in actual population, have taken place since 1989, are shown in the table. Reduction of population took place in all districts of region, except for the Novopskov district, where this an index remained at the level of 1989.
