The peculiarity of the national structure of the population of the region is its multinational composition. According to the data of the All-Ukrainian census of the population, the representatives of more than 120 nationalities and ethnic groups lived on the territory of the region.(In Ukraine over 130). The part of Ukrainians in the national structure of the population of the region was the largest – 1472.4 thousand people, or 58% of the total population. Between 1989 and 2001, number Ukrainians decreased 0.7%,and their part among other citizens of Ukraine has increased by 6.1 percentage points.

   Russians are the second numerous nation of region. Since 1989 their number has decreased by 22.5% and at the date of the census it accounted for 991.8 thousand people. The part of Russians in total population has decreased by 5.8 percentage points or 39.0% of total population.
